Stronger Cracks the Web Security Industry’s Gender Code

Female-run cyber security firm disrupts male-dominated industry

Stronger International founder and CEO Heather Stratford infiltrated the web security industry’s “boys’ club” by starting her own firm and employing other women.

According to the 2017 Global Information Security Workplace Study, globally, men in the cybersecurity industry are “four times more likely to be in a C-level position, four times more likely to be in executive management and nine times more likely to be in a managerial position.”

“The collective cybersecurity industry is struggling to keep up with today’s cybercrime epidemic,” Stratford said. “At Stronger, we believe improving female representation is key to finding palpable solutions and meeting the growing demand for skilled cybersecurity professionals.”

According to the 2017 Global Information Security Workplace Study, North American women comprise 14 percent of the cybersecurity workforce. In the United States, women make up 48 percent of all laborers. Additionally, the study pointed out that addressing the underrepresentation of women in cybersecurity is one important way companies can begin to fill the 1.8 million worker gap projected for 2022.

Research shows that diverse teams produce more innovative ideas, smarter solutions, and are ultimately better for a company’s bottom line. But women in the industry face challenges with discrimination. These challenges can be eased with more women in leadership roles.

“I think it’s safe to say that men are currently calling the shots in this field,” Stratford said. “I created Stronger with the intention of building a team with varied talents and backgrounds. By not ignoring half the population, we are building a diversity of thought that delivers better ideas and better solutions.”
