Everyone is busy. It seems like there is never enough time for work or personal. However the software patch that we sometimes procrastinate performing, can be the difference between your company experiencing a data breach, and being safe and secure.
According to research firm Voke Media, 79% of the breaches reported by companies in their survey could have been prevented by a simple software patch or configuration change. 79% is a huge number that should make everyone stop and think. Add to that idea the current cost of to an organization once a breach has occurred. IBM and the Ponemon Institute currently (2017) estimate the average cost of each record stolen or compromised at $141 dollars per record.
Patching is a critical part of a security strategy. It’s seems simple. And it is. It needs to be as automatic as locking your door before you leave the office. You wouldn’t leave the door open overnight, and that is what patching is equivalent to. Updating software patches on all devices from the least technical to the people running your system. Want an example? Equifax’s breach’s main cause was directly related to patching.
Make updating a part of your regular routine. It’s worth it.
