Privacy and security are merging. Big data, machine learning, and a growing body of legislation is driving this change. Each still have their own territories, certainly, but increasingly there is overlap and synergy.
The changing landscape of securing data is reaching out to include more departments, good communication skills have never been more important. Data protection, breach detection and response aren’t the only areas thinking of security issues. Public relations and boards of directors are also involved.
Today, security is everyone’s responsibility. And everyone has a part to play to prevent and recover from eventual breaches.
Last year, data breaches increased by 17%, returning us to a pattern of an “ever-increasing number of breaches and volume of records exposed.”
These breaches and exposure are not only an IT issue but a business nightmare. They are expensive — in loss of business, loss of reputation, and loss of trust. Recovering from a breach is not something only done by the IT department. It also doesn’t begin only after a breach. Preparation is critical.
