NCSAM Cybersecurity Awareness Month Post

2019 Cybersecurity Awareness Month

It’s October, which means it’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

Fifteen years ago, in 2004, the National Cyber Security Alliance and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security turned October into Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCAM). This public-private partnership’s goal is to help Americans better understand the consequences of online activity resulting in a safer and more secure environment.

Why October? Perhaps because it’s the ideal moment to update, upgrade, and refresh cybersecurity awareness before the frantic holiday season begins.

Over the past 15 years, the message has evolved from “Our Shared Responsibility” to include “Stop.Think.Connect.” and currently “Own IT. Secure IT. Protect IT.” This new focus encourages personal, proactive accountability as well as highlighting careers in cybersecurity. More specifically, the “Own IT” component focuses on understanding your digital profile, while the “Secure IT” component seeks to keep your digital profile safe and, lastly, maintenance of your digital footprint is covered by “Protect IT.”

There’s no better time than now, during National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, to improve your ability to own, secure, and protect your own online presence  as well as your organization’s.
